The Mountain Gave Up a Sambar | S3E9

After a roller coaster first hunt in the Victorian High Country, Chris Waters rejoins KC as they continue their public land hunt chasing a Sambar deer for KC to harvest—this time with a smarter plan and a renewed sense of determination.

They move into a new area: a rocky, sandy slope loaded with fresh sign, acting like a highway for deer moving between feeding zones. Every track tells a story, and every decision could mean the difference between success and another long walk back to camp empty-handed.

Following the sign all the way to the top of the mountain, KC and Chris set up on a rocky knob. It’s here that they call in a sambar and face a tense standoff. When KC finally takes the shot, everything changes. This isn’t just a deer—it’s his first-ever Victorian public land sambar, taken high above the valley floor.

What follows is the real work: quartering and butchering the animal on the mountaintop and packing out over 200 kilograms of clean, wild, healthy venison that KC will take home to feed his family. This is meat hunting in its purest form. This is perseverance. This is growth. This is why we hunt.
